E-mobility: Volvo Concept Recharge – looking ahead

Volvo is going electric – this is not new and so the Chinese Swedes have long been in good company among international car manufacturers. But no one knew what this future of electric cars would look like. The concept study of the Concept Recharge gives a glimpse into the near future.

Like many other manufacturers, Volvo has had to make do with the fact that the current electric models such as the Volvo XC40 Recharge or a Polestar 2 are on a platform that currently also use the combustion models. This will be a thing of the past in the next generation and the aim is to use the space available in the electric models much more efficiently thanks to the omitted front engine and a flat vehicle floor. The study by the Volvo Concept Recharge shows what the upcoming crossover models from Sweden could look like. The short overhangs and the associated large interior, under which the maximum battery pack is hidden, are characteristic. In addition, the changed proportions ensure that the series models, for which the study is to pave the way, not only have more variable space inside, but also significantly better aerodynamics, which should be noticeable in a lower noise level and a greater range.

The design of the Concept Recharge is even more puristic than you know from current Volvo models. Inside and out, the design lines are kept to a minimum. What has remained is a tidy front with the famous shield-shaped radiator grille and LED lights with T-optics. A new feature is HD-capable graphics technology that exposes the main lighting units at night, while the familiar vertical taillights at the rear expand at higher speeds. “Our Volvo Concept Recharge gives a glimpse of the fully electric future of Volvo Cars and a new type of vehicle,” explains Volvo Design Director Robin Page. “The modern proportions increase the versatility in the interior. At the same time, the concept vehicle shows what new technology can make possible in terms of design.”

The interior of the Volvo Concept Recharge is as puristic as it is on the outside. The flat floor provides more space and improves the seating position for all occupants. A 15-inch portrait touchscreen is the center of the dashboard and controls for all important functions. “Inside we have created a truly Scandinavian living room atmosphere,” continues Robin Page. “This is where our latest control technology is combined with beautiful, sustainable and natural materials. Each element is like a work of art and would also function as an individual piece of furniture in a room.” All that remains is to wait for the first production model.
