Eating less is more beneficial than intermittent fasting

Bad news for fans of intermittent fasting: You won’t lose more weight or fat with this diet than with a low-calorie diet. This is suggested by a study that compared the effects of different diets. Conclusion: Long meal breaks, which make up intermittent fasting, also had no other positive health effects.

The research team’s assumption was that intermittent fasting would have stronger effects than regular diets. “This was not confirmed in the course of the three-week study. The greatest weight and fat losses were experienced by those who reduced their daily energy intake,” said study author James Bett of the University of Bath. Intermittent fasting has gained popularity in recent years, not least because of autophagy – a kind of recycling system in the cell. Criticism of the study comes from the German fasting expert Andreas Michalsen, who noted that the extreme form of intermittent fasting was investigated, in which people only eat every other day.
