More sustainability in agriculture: A government commission has presented a final report in which different interests are taken into account.
Chancellor Angela Merkel (CDU) has spoken out in favor of restructuring agriculture in Germany towards more sustainability and has called for financial security for it.
What is needed is a comprehensive transformation process that has started and must be vigorously continued, said Merkel on Tuesday when receiving recommendations from a government commission. Reliable financial framework conditions would have to be created for this.
The committee succeeded in looking at different interests and pointing out possible paths for the future. The submission of the final report is therefore “an important day” in the history of agriculture for Germany. The next federal government will not be able to get around this report.
The commission recommends a far-reaching restructuring of the agricultural and food system as a task for society as a whole. Billions in investments are estimated for this. The committee included representatives from farmers and the food industry, nature and consumer protectionists, trade and science. Merkel had proposed it in the face of peasant protests at the end of 2019. The aim was also to seek a consensus after years of heated disputes about the direction of agriculture.
