Iconic punk designer Vivienne Westwood has died

punk aesthetic

Disruptive and provocative, Westwood was, along with her partner, the late malcolm mcclarenone of those responsible for the punk aesthetic.

Together they formed a creative duo that went down in history for having made an invaluable contribution to the look of punks and, later, British new wave.

His “Sex” boutique store became a London icon, attracting hundreds of young people in the second half of the 1970s.

From there came the Sex Pistols, a band that Westwood and McClaren invented and managed during their fleeting existence.

Upon learning of the designer’s death, Pistols guitarist Steve Jones shared a photo with her on his social networks and illustrated it with a crying emoticon.

“Truly a very sad day. Rest in peace, dear Viv,” commented the musician.

In turn, Glen Matlock, original bassist for the Sex Pistols, posted a photo of Viv on Instagram and wrote: “Just heard the sad news about a unique, talented and determined woman. A privilege to have rubbed shoulders with her in the mid 70’s. at the birth of punk and the ripples it spawned that still resonate with the disaffected today.”

art and activism

Born in Tintwistle, in 1941, Vivienne continued to do what she loved until the very end, with projects, artwork, writing her book and trying to change the world for the better. She had an extraordinary life and her innovation and her impact over the past 60 years have been immense and will continue into the future.

“I will continue to hold Vivienne in my heart,” said Andreas Kronthaler, the stylist’s husband and creative partner. “We worked through to the end and she gave me a lot to go on with. Thank you darling.”

“The world – reads the statement announcing the death – needs people like Vivienne to change for the better. She was the undeniable queen of punk aesthetics, in recent times, she considered herself a Taoist”

“Spiritual system of the Tao,” he had written. “There has never been such a need for the Tao as today. The Tao gives you a sense of belonging to the cosmos and gives your life purpose. It gives you such a sense of identity and strength to know that you are living the life you can live and therefore should live, make full use of your character and full use of your life on Earth,” he wrote.

Vivienne always fought for justice and fairness and worked on a plan to save the world. The rebellious stylist, despite her 81-year-old age, she continued to be a political activist until shortly before her death.

“Julian Assange – he had recently declared – is a hero and was treated atrociously by the British government.” Or, “capitalism is a crime. It is the main cause of war, climate change and corruption.”

“The Vivienne Foundation -recalls the note- a non-profit society, founded by Westwood at the end of 2022, with her children and grandson, will be officially launched next year to honor, protect and continue the heritage of life, of Vivienne’s design and activism”.

The objective of the Foundation is to raise awareness and create tangible change and work with NGOs, based on four pillars: climate change, stop war, defense of human rights and protest against capitalism.
