Paris Fashion Week: Givenchy’s gallows chain causes a stir

At the current Fashion Week in Paris, the Givenchy fashion house is also showing its collection for spring / summer 2022. But one accessory is getting a real shit storm.

The fashion week in Paris lets designers once again present their latest collections for the coming spring 2022. For designer Matthew Williams, who has only been creative director at Givenchy since June 2020, there is more criticism than encouragement on social media. A very specific accessory is the subject of conversation: a chain in the shape of a gallows.

Paris Fashion Week: Outrage on Social Media

In some cases, users sharply criticize the fashion label on social media. The design’s allusion to a gallows noose would romanticize suicide. In an Instagram post by the fashion blog “Diet Prada”, a user comments: “How could that be approved by several people before the show and everyone thought it was okay?” Others suggest that the necklace was intentionally created to attract attention.

Gallows motif as jewelry: Givenchy fashion house not the first

Givenchy is not the first fashion house to bring up allusions to a gallows in a fashion creation. Because the British label Burberry had already triggered a wave of criticism in 2019 when it presented a hoodie whose cord was unmistakably tied in the form of a loop. The fact that the noose was also worn around the neck at Burberry doesn’t make things any nicer.

Burberry apologized

The fashion house Burberry has already publicly apologized after the incident in 2019. Burberry boss Marco Gobetti described the design to CNN in retrospect as “insensitive” and a “mistake”. He also apologizes for any grief the design may have caused. It seems like Givenchy didn’t really learn from the Burberry incident. A statement from the French label about their gallows chain is still pending.
