Hungary is said to receive several billion euros from the EU’s Corona reconstruction fund. But the Commission is denying the country an important assessment, without which there is no money.
Ursula von der Leyen’s EU Commission is once again fighting with the government of Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban. According to dpa information, the Brussels authority is currently refusing to give the Hungarian plan for the use of EU Corona aid a positive rating.
According to information from EU circles, this is due to insufficient guarantees and precautions against improper use of the funds. A positive assessment of the plan for the use of funds is a prerequisite for Hungary to be able to receive money from the EU’s so-called development and resilience facility (RFF). According to current calculations, around 7.2 billion euros are actually earmarked for the country.
The commission had recently quarreled with the government of right-wing politician Orban over a law restricting information on homosexuality and transsexuality. EU Commission chief von der Leyen called the law a shame and even wants to bring it to the European Court of Justice if necessary. She considers the law to be discriminatory and therefore incompatible with the values of the EU.
How the dispute over the plan for Corona aid could be resolved was initially unclear. The Hungarian representation to the EU could not initially be reached for an opinion.
