Ruth Moschner’s family kept their religion a secret
“It is therefore all the more important to me to tell you my story of being ‘Jewish'”, explains Moschner in the caption. “I was born in 1976. In my family, Jewish descent was an absolute taboo. Most of my ancestors fled to Israel during the Second World War and later settled in the USA,” explains the presenter, explaining her family history. She also reveals how the family kept their true religion a secret.
“The few who remained in Germany were baptized Christian for protection. So did I. ‘Don’t tell anyone that you are of Jewish descent!’ It was said. My great-aunt was very afraid of assaults until her death and warned against openly ‘Jewish existence’, “says Moschner.
Believer, but not religious
“I am a very devout, but not a religious person. But it is part of my story that shapes me. And of course it hurts me when people like Gil Ofarim experience anti-Semitism because of the Star of David. That must not be!” emphasizes the 45-year-old. She also writes that tolerance can be practiced. “Then we can benefit from the individuality of our society,” says Moschner.
She received a lot of encouragement in the comments below her post. Gil Ofarim uploaded a video to Instagram on Tuesday in which he said he was not served in a Leipzig hotel because he had a Star of David pendant on his chain. His video went viral and the hotel has now put two employees on leave.
