Prince Harry’s memoirs are called “Spare”. As a first excerpt from the book shows, the substitute role runs through Harry’s life – and culminated in a rift with the family.
It seems Princess Diana foresaw what might happen to her sons Harry and William. That the different roles assigned to them by birth would eventually come between them. Harry is the replacement and William the heir, that is factually correct and at the same time the source of many conflicts.
Prince Harry and the backup role
As royal expert James Patterson explained in his biography of the late princess, published last year, Diana was always keen to pay special attention to Harry. Because William got enough of it from the rest of the family.
“She was concerned about that. It’s a normal thing for families. One of the kids [wird] do better in school or become a better athlete because apparently it’s a little bit more charming and loveable. How can you make the other children feel that they are enough? This happens in pretty much all families. And there’s a lot more at stake in this case because one of the kids will probably be king one day,” Patterson told Fox News Digital last year.
Diana even reportedly called her younger son “Good King Harry” on occasion. According to royal expert Angela Levin, Diana believed the 38-year-old could go on to make a better monarch than William, who was born for the role. But within the Royal Family, the matter was clear: there is a line of succession and it matters.

According to Harry – as quoted by the British newspaper “The Guardian” – King Charles III. said to Princess Diana at the birth of Harry: “Wonderful! Now you’ve given me an heir and a surrogate child – my job is done.” A tough statement – if it’s true.

Today you have to realize that the different roles of the two ultimately drove a wedge between them – despite the efforts of their mother, who died in 1997. In his memoir, Harry hints that William made him feel the backup role, according to The Guardian. William is said to have been bothered that Harry wasn’t content with that once and for all. Already in the Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan”, the dropout royal accused his brother of putting the institution above the relationship between the two.
