Tourism: ticket sales to Rio de Janeiro grew 419%

It is that in recent weeks there has been an exponential jump in the sale of air tickets to foreign destinations, but mainly to Brazil. Proof of this is what happened with one of the cities preferred by Argentines: Rio de Janeiro.

According to figures from the Despegar company, The sale of tickets to that destination grew 419% year-on-year, if December 2021 is compared to the same month of 2022.

“From Despegar we are proud to see in the statistics that travelers are once again betting on traveling through the region. Brazil is one of the favorite places of Argentines and that is why we have exclusive promotions to enjoy the destination”, said Paula Christi, Despegar Country Manager for Argentina and Uruguay.

Although Brazil historically appears as one of the preferred international destinations for Argentines, in the last record a jump rarely seen was observed, with the particularity that it occurs in a context of exchange crisis, high inflation and loss of the purchasing power of wages .

From Despegar they also highlighted that incoming tourism showed highly positive growth. “In December 2022, almost 10,000 Brazilians entered the country through Despegar, that is, 171% more than in 2021”the company reported in a statement.

Beyond the internal complications for the locals, Brazilian citizens have the advantage of the exchange rate since in recent months the possibility for foreign tourists to have a special dollar price was implemented, at a value similar to the parallel , through credit cards without having to go to a cave or illegal exchange house.

Regarding the ranking of destinations most chosen by Brazilians, those with the greatest increase were Ushuaia (+924%), Neuquen (+900%), jump (+488%), rosary beads (+446%), Bariloche (+378%), Mendoza (+373%), the calafate (+350%), Cordova (+200%), silver sea (+200%) and The Rioja (+200%).

Likewise, official data from the Mintur show that 7.4 million visitors from abroad entered the country during 2022. The report indicates that, during the last quarter of the year, the recovery of incoming tourism was 75% compared to the pre-pandemic, which positions Argentina as the regional leader of this index.
