Addressing the film’s anti-war theme, Le Parisien asked Sy if he found the current conflict in Ukraine disturbing.
Sy responded that the war had not been “a crazy revelation” to him and that other conflicts taking place further afield had already touched him in equal measure.
“Does it mean that when he is in Africa, you get less? I feel equally threatened, whether in Iran or Ukraine.”, answered. “A war is a dark shadow over humanity, even when it is on the other side of the world. Let us remember that man is capable of invading, of attacking civilians and children. It feels like we have to wait for the Ukraine to realize this.”.
“Oh, but my friends? I’ve seen him since he was little. When he’s far away, they say over there, they’re wild, we’re not like that anymore. It’s like at the beginning of Covid, when people said: it’s just the Chinese.”
These responses generated rejection from some French center-right politicians. In a new interview, Sy addressed such criticism: “Of course, it’s racism and I say that out loud. Is it because I am the son of an immigrant that I cannot express myself about France? Why am I black, that I can’t express myself in France?”
