Rainer Holzschuh: Sports journalist is dead

The longtime “Kicker” editor Rainer Holzschuh is dead. The sports journalist died at the age of 77.

German football mourns the loss of Rainer Holzschuh. The journalist and longtime editor of the “Kicker” magazine died on Thursday night at the age of 77. The sports magazine announces.

During his law studies, Holzschuh was already working as a freelancer for the “Augsburger Allgemeine”, and from 1971 he headed the West editorial team at “Kicker”. From 1978 to 1983 he was head of the north editorial office. After a stint as press officer at the German Football Association (DFB), he switched again to “Kicker” and was responsible for the magazine as editor-in-chief and publisher (2010 to 2020). “Rainer Holzschuh has shaped the sports media landscape for decades as the face of the ‘kicker’. His work will remain visible for a long time to come,” said Bärbel Schnell, managing director of Olympia-Verlag.

Clubs show sympathy

Numerous German soccer clubs have already said goodbye to Holzschuh on social media. “A painful loss for football: Rainer Holzschuh will be remembered as an important personality in German sports journalism”,. They also paid tribute to Holzschuh’s services as a journalist. The German Football League: “We mourn Rainer Holzschuh, who has shaped German sports journalism in the past decades like few others.” Sports reporter and ex-professional Torben Hoffmann (46): “RIP Rainer Holzschuh. Lots of strength and thoughts for the family!”
