Prince Harry has probably done himself a disservice: Because he reported in his autobiography that he had killed 25 Taliban in Afghanistan, the son of King Charles III. as a terrorist target – and endangers the Invicuts Games in Düsseldorf.
The book is actually supposed to be a liberation: In his autobiography “Spare”, which will be published on Tuesday, Prince Harry wants to regain the power to interpret his own life. But for days the book has been discussed mainly because of the many indiscretions that Queen Elizabeth II’s grandson spreads about his family. From his first time to the condition of his genitals, the prince rarely leaves anything out.
But maybe Harry went a bit too far with his chatter. This is how the 38-year-old describes his time in Afghanistan in detail, where he was stationed as a combat helicopter crew member. Apparently he was also involved in combat operations: “One of the most important things I learned in the army is that I am responsible for my own actions. So my number: 25,” Prince Harry is quoted in the British press – and by that means the people he killed.
The second son of King Charles III continued: “As I immersed myself in the heat and confusion of the battle, I didn’t think that there were 25 people. You can’t kill people when you see them as people. They were pawns who were taken off the board – bad guys who get eliminated before they kill the good guys.”
Prince Harry remembers Afghanistan
The prince would have preferred to keep this precise reminder of his wartime missions to himself. “Bragging about it is frowned upon among soldiers,” terror expert Peter Neumann told the “Bild” newspaper. Above all, he put himself in danger. The security risk is increasing for the Royal, according to Neumann, who worked as an advisor on Armin Laschet’s campaign team in 2021. “He has a target on his forehead because he is now a legitimate terrorist target for Islamists.”
Because Prince Harry’s words have also been precisely registered with the Taliban. Taliban official Anas Haqqani has already responded, addressing the royal directly on Twitter: “The fighters you killed were not pawns, they were people; they had families waiting for their return.”
The endangerment affects not only him personally – it could also have an impact on the Invictus Games planned for September this year, a sporting event for war-disabled soldiers that Prince Harry launched in 2014. This year the event will take place in Düsseldorf. In the North Rhine-Westphalian state capital, people are therefore already concerned and are working on the security concept.
