Anyone who has a name in Hollywood is a guest in Beverly Hills today – the Golden Globes will be presented there for the 80th time. However, Germany’s candidate loses against the Argentine competition.
The anti-war film “Nothing New in the West” by director Edward Berger went empty-handed at the Golden Globes. The prize in the category “Best Foreign Language Film” went to Argentina for “Argentina, 1985”. Also nominated were “Close” (Belgium), “Decision to Leave” (South Korea) and “RRR” (India).
The Foreign Press Association (HFPA) awards in 27 film and television categories were presented during the night in Beverly Hills. Other winners of the gala broadcast live by NBC this time were:
Best Supporting Actor: Ke Huy Quan (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)Best Supporting Actress: Angela Bassett (“Black Panther: Wakanda Forever”)Best Actor in a Comedy/Musical: Colin Farrell (“The Banshees of Inisherin”)Best Actress in Comedy/Musical: Michelle Yeoh (“Everything Everywhere All at Once”)Best Drama Actor: Austin Butler (“Elvis”)Best Drama Actress: Cate Blanchett (“Tár”)Director’s Globe: Steven Spielberg (“The Fabelmans “)
Volodymyr Zelenskyj also spoke in a video message. The Ukrainian President thanked for supporting his country in the war against Russia. “You were the best in the past year,” said Selenskyj to the assembled Hollywood celebrities about the solidarity that his country had experienced.
The Golden Globes were first awarded in 1943, when the Second World War was not yet over, but the most important battles had already been fought. “Even the war in Ukraine is not over yet, but the tide is turning and it is already clear who will win in the end,” Zelenskyj said.
Last January, NBC canceled traditional TV broadcasts. Nominees stayed away from the event, which is usually full of stars. The names of the winners were only announced via the HFPA association’s social media accounts. The reason for this was, among other things, massive criticism of the association for a lack of diversity. As part of a restructuring, the pool of Globe jurors has now become larger and more diverse.
