Awards ceremony: School series “Abbott Elementary” clears up at Golden Globes

One of the night’s winners at the 80th Golden Globes was a popular comedy series. Meanwhile, the German anti-war film “Nothing New in the West” is losing to Argentinian competition.

The comedy series Abbott Elementary, about a Philadelphia elementary school, is the big winner in the Golden Globes TV categories. At the awards ceremony in Beverly Hills, the series won three awards, including Best Comedy, Best Comedy Lead Quinta Brunson, and Tyler James Williams for Best Supporting Actor. Brunson is also the creator and producer of the series. Best Comedy Actor was Jeremy Allen White as a young chef in The Bear.

The “Game of Thrones” spin-off “House of the Dragon” received the award for best drama series. Zendaya won Best Actress in a Drama Series for the youth series Euphoria, and Kevin Costner won Best Actor for his role in the neowestern Yellowstone.

The best miniseries/television film was “White Lotus”, a bitter satire on spoiled super-rich people on luxury vacations. Supporting actress Jennifer Coolidge also won a Globe for it. Lead Actor Awards in this category went to Evan Peters for “Dahmer” and Amanda Seyfried for “The Dropout.” Paul Walter Hauser won Best Supporting Actor in a Miniseries for Black Bird.

Greetings from Kyiv

Volodymyr Zelenskyj also spoke in a video message. The Ukrainian President thanked for supporting his country in the war against Russia. “You were the best in the past year,” said Selenskyj to the assembled Hollywood celebrities about the solidarity that his country had experienced.

The Golden Globes were first awarded in 1943, when the Second World War was not yet over, but the most important battles had already been fought. “Even the war in Ukraine is not over yet, but the tide is turning and it is already clear who will win in the end,” Zelenskyj said.

The Globe trophies in 27 film and television categories from the Association of Foreign Press (HFPA) were presented for the 80th time. In January 2022, NBC canceled traditional TV broadcasts. The reason for this was, among other things, massive criticism of the association for a lack of diversity. As part of a restructuring, the pool of Globe jurors has now become larger and more diverse.
