TV show: “Drama of Death” – RTL jungle camp started

Arguing about the beds and a broken foot, escalation on the first day: on RTL, the jungle campers deliver what is expected of them right from the start – only one is missing.

“I didn’t think it would be like this on the first day,” says a blushing Claudia Effenberg, somewhat amazed at the drama that is unfolding before her eyes.

Because in the middle of the jungle stands Tessa Bergmeier, who showed Heidi Klum the finger on “Germany’s Next Top Model” many years ago, on and in the fire, roars – and is yelled at.

She argues with camp colleague Jolina Mennen about the sleeping places, with Cosimo Citiolo about the question of whether he broke her foot in another reality format and with ex-“Bachelor” candidate Cecilia Asoro about the fact that she was previously with argued with the other two.

Effenberg as mediator

“Don’t yell at each other like that,” demands Effenberg at some point, who not only demonstrates mediator skills, but also special biological knowledge (“Opossum, isn’t that a hippopotamus?”). Asoro’s summary of day one in the rainforest: “Drama of Death.”

Escalation at the campfire? That can only mean one thing: the RTL jungle camp is back. The cult show “I’m a star – get me out of here!” started on Friday evening. with a roar – but without actor Martin Semmelrogge (“Das Boot”).

Bread rye is missing

The 67-year-old who was originally announced as a candidate was not allowed to enter Australia, according to the newcomer and moderator Jan Köppen (took over the job alongside Sonja Zietlow after many years from Daniel Hartwich and remained a bit pale), was “still in Doha Celebration”. “Maybe one or two previous convictions too many,” he says. Semmelrogge has had trouble with the judiciary several times in the past. Whether this is final or whether there is still hope that Semmelrogge can still move into the camp remained open at first.

His place in the first episode was taken by Djamila Rowe, who gained a certain notoriety because she invented an affair with an ambassador about 20 years ago and, according to her, her face doesn’t even move when she – jungle test number one – jumps out of the plane on a parachute: “Botox. Nothing moves anymore.”

Son of a jungle king with it

A total of twelve more or less well-known candidates have moved into the camp, including Lucas Cordalis, who sees himself as the scion of a royal jungle dynasty because his father Costa Cordalis, who died in 2019, was the first jungle king in 2004 and his sister-in-law, Daniela Katzenberger’s sister Jenny Frankhauser, in 2018 became queen of the jungle.

The show will be filmed in Australia again for the first time since 2020. In 2021, the jungle camp fell victim to the corona pandemic; there was only one substitute version filmed in Cologne. In 2022, “I’m a Celebrity – Get Me Out of Here!” filmed in South Africa.

And otherwise everything will be back in 2023 as you are used to from the Australian RTL jungle. There’s disgusting food like crocodile eyes, pig penises or bull testicles, choking and throwing up and discussions about whether it’s fair for vegans like Tessa (“My body is no grave”) to refuse to take part. The fact that she is the first to be chosen by the audience for the next test also follows a reliable jungle logic.

Candidate Gigi Birofio summarizes the requirements for the participants in an almost English-sounding manner and as an answer to the legendary question from the former jungle participant Sarah Knappik (“What happens when we break?”): “You’re losing when you’re puke.” In doing so, he gets to the heart of what has probably been the most important jungle motto for years: He who throws up loses.
