In statements made to the IGN site the director Johannes Roberts (Terror at 47 Meters) has said that his inspirations are in The Exorcist, The glow and the cinema of John Carpenter, director of The Thing among others.

Regarding the differences with the previous saga, Roberts has said that the previous adaptations (directed by Paul WS Anderson) were action movies, and the new one is horror. They will also be choral films, with multiple protagonists instead of a central figure such as Alice (Jovovich), a character who was not in the games.

“This is not ‘cosplay,’” says the director, “the characters are not exact copies of those in the games. Jill Valentine (Hannah John-Kamen) is very funny, a small town girl who wants to fight, but without superhuman strength. Leon Kennedy (Avan Gojia) is the character I chose for the viewer to see the film through his eyes. I wanted to get away from the action hero of the newer games and get back that rookie cop personality from Resident Evil 2. “

The film will star Kaya Scodelario, Robbie Amell, Hannah John-Kamen, Avan Jogia, Tom Hopper, Lily Gao, Neal McDonough, and Donal Logue.

“Resident Evil: Welcome to Raccoon City” opens in theaters on December 2, 2021.
