The relationship has always been characterized by competition, says Harry. An old interview clip of the brothers now seems to illustrate this. With the knowledge from the book, the video immediately has a different undertone.
Between his front-line assignments in Afghanistan, Harry shared one of their rare double interviews with William. The younger brother was training to be a fighter pilot at the time and shared a country house with William.
In an airplane hangar in Shawbury, the two met with journalists and cameramen. Harry was asked about his learning progress and his favorite helicopters, as well as his frontline service and his desire to return.
Clearly visible in the clip: while his brother is talking, Prince William is watching him. But whenever the heir to the throne himself gets a chance to speak, he seems to take the opportunity to keep Harry down. His brother was sloppy, he said, and Harry snored.
“I turned and eyed him. Was he joking?” writes Harry in his book. “I put my things away and I didn’t snore. Also, our rooms were separated by thick walls, so even if I snored he couldn’t possibly hear it. The reporters burst out laughing, but I intervened: Lie! Lie!“, the ex-Royal describes the scene in retrospect.
In fact, with all of today’s knowledge of the relationship, the scene seems at least odd. Prince William appears to be a driven young man who must ridicule his competition. “When I think about it now, I have to wonder if there wasn’t something else at stake,” Harry says today. At that time he was training for deployment at the front and that’s exactly what his brother wanted. But William was denied an Afghanistan mission. It was too risky. Nothing should happen to the heir to the throne.

“So Willy was now doing search and rescue pilot training and I guess he was secretly frustrated by that. In this case, he got it all wrong. He was saving lives every week, which I think was a remarkable, vital job,” he said Husband of Meghan Markle. He would assess the situation differently today, have empathy for his brother.

The scene is causing debates online. “Watch his energy drained by William trying to outdo him for no good reason. Thank goodness he’s out of this toxic environment,” wrote one user who shared the clip. Other users, on the other hand, believe that this is a normal sibling relationship.
If Harry’s own words are to be believed, the relationship was never normal – because it just couldn’t be. William was the heir to the throne, the heir, and Harry only the reserve, the spare.
