David Crosby grew up in Los Angeles and Santa Barbara and was the son of Oscar-winning cinematographer Floyd Crosby. The musician formed The Byrds with members Roger McGuinn, Gene Clark, Chris Hillman and Michael Clarke and set the tone for folk-rock music of the ’60s from 1964 to 1967. Then in 1968 Crosby teamed up with Stephen Stills (78) of Buffalo Springfield and Graham Nash (80) of the Hollies to form Crosby, Stills & Nash. In 1997 the band was inducted into the Hall of Fame.
Exuberant lifestyle
In his private life, Crosby struggled with his drug addiction for several years. In 1994 he underwent a liver transplant. In 1982, he was arrested in Texas for drug and gun possession, which resulted in five months in prison. In 2019, the musician opened up about his ups and downs, sharing that it was music that got him through it all. “It’s the only contribution I can make,” he said at the time. “Look, it’s dark out here now. The world is not a happy place. Music is an uplifting force. Music makes things better.”
Crosby is survived by his wife Jan Dance and their children, sons Django and James and daughters Erika and Donovan. Singer Melissa Etheridge, 61, had previously confirmed that Crosby is the biological father of her two children, Bailey and Beckett (who died in 2020), whom she fathered through artificial insemination with her former partner Julie Cypher.
She has already paid tribute to Crosby: “I mourn the loss of my friend and Bailey and Beckett’s biological father, David. He gave me the gift of family. I will forever be grateful to him, Django and Jan. His music and legacy will be many inspire future generations. A real treasure.”
Crosby leaves ‘a tremendous void’
Other companions and musicians have also responded to Crosby’s death on social media. Former bandmate Graham Nash wrote, “David was fearless in life and in music. He leaves a tremendous void of real personality and talent in this world. […] He leaves an incredible legacy. My heart is with his wife Jan, his son Django and all the people he has touched in this world.”
Fellow musician Brian Wilson (80), co-founder of the Beach Boys, : “I don’t know what to say except that it breaks my heart to hear from David Crosby. David was an incredible talent – such a great singer and songwriter. And a wonderful person. Words just fail me.”
of The Doors stated: “The world has lost another important figure in the peace and love movement of the 1960s; a legend in his own right and every group he was a part of. David Crosby, who flourished in the same era as The Doors, had the voice and songwriting skills that made him totally unique”
