Kim Kardashian, of all people, gave a speech at the renowned Harvard University. It was about business and her company Skims. Criticism and malice rained down on the internet.
The last time Harvard probably saw such a fashion moment was when Elle Woods (played by Reese Witherspoon) enrolled at the university in Legally Blonde. Dressed in a black leather coat, Kim Kardashian – flanked by bodyguards and cameramen – strutted into an elite university building on Friday, where she was delivering a speech.

Together with co-founder Jens Grede, the entrepreneur spoke about her fashion empire Skims. Kardashian started out with shapewear, but now she also sells men’s and women’s clothing with an inclusive size range.
According to Forbes, Skims is now worth a good three billion dollars. A smash hit for Kardashian, who often promotes Skims products herself on her social media channels. And yet Kardashian’s speech to students at Harvard University caused criticism and malice online.
“This is hilarious. Kim Kardashian can’t even spell Harvard,” wrote one user on Twitter. Another went into more detail and criticized that Kardashian was not the right person to educate about a successful business. Because she was born with success. “Kim Kardashian was born wealthy. She attempted to pursue an acting or singing career with a sextape; neither succeeded,” the user wrote. “Kim K. was wealthy enough to author a scripted reality TV show do because they and their family are shameless. Harvard is now as seedy as the Kardashians.”
“I would hate to pay Harvard tuition just to get her to speak. Better up Harvard,” commented another.

Meanwhile, Kardashian’s speech was well received by the students themselves – mainly young women. “I think a lot of people don’t respect her as someone who helps run a billion-dollar company,” one student told NBC10 Boston. “Learning from someone who has built such a successful business has been really exciting, and I think it was also special not having cameras in the room and being able to have this open conversation,” she explained.
One thing has to be conceded to Kardashian: A company does not become successful and worth several billion dollars on its own.
