Arnold Schwarzenegger looked for the public eye again at the Ski World Cup in Austria – and found it. He stayed with the race when other celebrities had already fled due to the weather.
Blowing snow and poor visibility: It wasn’t really comfortable in the spectator stands at the Hahnenkamm race near Kitzbühel on Saturday. The ranks cleared noticeably before the end of the race, but one could not be prevented from enjoying: Arnold Schwarzenegger (75), ex-politician, ex-actor and ex-bodybuilder, sat enthroned between girlfriend and daughter with a wide permanent smile, let himself unperturbed, trickling the snow onto the broad brim of his hat and telling reporters: “I love Austria.”
The American, called Arnie or “Styrian Oak”, also made it to a joint photo in the finish area with the winner, the Norwegian Aleksander Aamodt Kilde. It must have been great, for Kilde of course, said the TV presenters, when the “Terminator” suddenly slapped you on the shoulder. The Terminator was a pitiless, unrepentant, and fearless villain who Schwarzenegger portrayed in a number of films.
The night before, Schwarzenegger had set the tone in front of 2,800 guests at the Weißwurst meal in Going, not far from Kitzbühel. The former governor of California declared the festival the best white sausage party in the world and flattered the landlord Balthasar Hauser: “Balthasar, you are the greatest”. It was whispered that Schwarzenegger also wanted to try the vegan white sausage – but whether it came to that remained his secret. Schwarzenegger is a regular at the Hahnenkamm race. There was room for 25,000 spectators along the route.
There, along with many other celebrities, was the singer DJ Ötzi, who looked with great respect at the steep slope and the courageous racers. “They’re all total heroes to me,” he said. According to DJ Ötzi, he had also registered for a celebrity race for a good cause, although only the lowest part of the route was to be used.
