Red, dominant in the Hoffmann sample

Red, dominant in the Hoffmann sample

We do not know if Eduardo Hoffmann used this meaning for the title of his current show, which brings together more than 20 works made between 2017 and 2021. There is nothing to indicate this, only that the artist says: “since he made his appearance in my life, I escort in happiness and from then on I could not do without the fact of using and enjoying it. I take care of its liquid to place it in me”. When using it, for him, the pulse of life is aroused, a reward for optimism, “painting with it is the most charming way of neglecting life.” Perhaps this concept comes from the teachings of his teacher Zravko Ducmelic from the National University of Cuyo, a work that revealed silence, stony landscapes, far from all devouring everyday life.

This red is present in many of the works and unfolds in invasive waves. But the artist knows how to dose and there are deep blacks, blues, a whole range that comes and goes through his thick brushstrokes, textures, gestures, drips, a paint that flows over the surface, sometimes chaotic, which we assume is the order for this artist in generally large works. Hoffmann uses a material that covers the fabric called Mylar, of Chinese origin, which not only protects it but also gives it great light.

The artist also addresses the figuration that was already present when we met his work in the 90s in Der Brücke, it resembled a palimpsest: a material plot that had to be decoded almost alchemically with great visual richness. At that time the works had titles but they are currently numbered and he has made more than 7,000. Born in Mendoza in 1957, he won his first prize in 1980 at the Vendimia 80 Plastic Arts Hall, the year in which he won the Collivadino Prize in 1949. National Hall. He also received the Young Argentine Painting Prize at the Amalia Lacroze Foundation in Fortabat, won the Consecrated Antorchas scholarship and began to participate in the Art Basel, Art Chicago, Art Miami, Arco, ArteBa., Documenta Kassel, FIAC (Paris) fairs. ).

An important sample is that of the Paseo de las Artes Duhau since it is not frequent to see his works in Buenos Aires because he works abroad; for example, he recently completed a 90m2 mural commissioned by the architect Norman Foster for a building in India, and by the important American designer Tony Chi for a venture in New York.
