The new state parliament in Saxony-Anhalt has already met for its first session, but there is not yet a new state government. That should change in the next few weeks.
Saxony-Anhalt is heading for a black-red-yellow coalition. The state chairmen of the CDU, SPD and FDP announced at a joint press conference on Wednesday that they would seek coalition negotiations.
The SPD still has to have this step confirmed by a party congress; in the case of the CDU and FDP, a vote of the board is sufficient. The SPD party conference is to take place on Friday next week.
The CDU found that “we have at least a basis in essential points,” said CDU country chief Sven Schulze. It was the first time that the exploratory parties commented on the talks. After the election victory in the state elections on June 6, the CDU had sounded out with the SPD, FDP and the Greens. A coalition of CDU, SPD and FDP does not currently govern anywhere in Germany.
