June was the fourth month in a row that air traffic continued to increase. But the level in the first half of the year is well below that of 2019.
After the lifting of travel restrictions, an increasing number of aircraft are in transit over Germany. In June, air traffic increased for the fourth month in a row, according to German air traffic control (DFS).
Nevertheless, the traffic volume in the first half of 2021 will only reach a third of the level of 2019.
As the DFS announced on Wednesday, 129,073 take-offs, landings and overflights were counted in German airspace in June. That was almost 30,000 more than in May of the current year, but 57.6 percent less than in June 2019 – before the corona pandemic. In the first six months of the year, DFS counted 531,217 flight movements in German airspace, two thirds (67 percent) less than in the first half of 2019.
Nevertheless, air traffic control sees a stable upward trend: “The downward trend is over. After many months of exceptional situations, we are slowly moving back towards normality, ”said DFS boss Arndt Schoenemann. By the end of this year, DFS expects an increase to 75 percent of the original traffic. According to current forecasts, air traffic will not reach its pre-crisis level again until 2025.
