According to Bavaria’s Minister of Health, Klaus Holetschek, the restricted recommendation for corona vaccinations for children and adolescents must be checked again on the basis of the latest data.
“We expect that we will soon have recommendations from the Standing Vaccination Commission (Stiko) so that there is clarity,” said the CSU politician to Bayerischer Rundfunk (BR).
Further: “We should also evaluate the data that is already available internationally as soon as possible.” He cited the USA as an example, where young people had been vaccinated for a long time. The data there and constantly new knowledge would have to form the basis for Germany in order to draw clear conclusions.
Stiko recommends vaccinations for 12 to 17 year olds only if they have certain pre-existing conditions. This is justified with the lower risk of severe Covid 19 disease in this age group. Federal Minister of Health Jens Spahn (CDU) speaks of an individual decision by parents, children and doctors. Recently, however, politicians had repeatedly criticized the restricted recommendation.
Holetschek also referred to a resolution of the conference of health ministers on Tuesday, which called on Stiko and the Federal Ministry of Health to issue a recommendation for booster vaccinations. According to the decision, this applies to people who have been vaccinated twice with Astrazeneca or once with Johnson and Johnson, i.e. also the question of whether and when a third vaccination is necessary for mRNA vaccines such as Biontech or Moderna and whether this can also be done with Astrazeneca .
Holetschek called on the population to take advantage of vaccination offers. “The more people now decide to have a vaccination, the more people are fully vaccinated, the better we will get through the autumn.” That is why there must be low-threshold offers. “Vaccination has to be made possible in passing, so to speak.”
