Actor and author Erich Schleyer has died

The MuTh theater, where Schleyer was last successful, officially announced this on Wednesday.

The Austrian child star actually came from Germany, as Schleyer was born on March 1, 1940 in Dresden. After studying at the Leipzig Theater School, he first played at the Maxim-Gorki-Theater in East Berlin. In 1968 he fled to the West and worked for Karlheinz Stroux in Düsseldorf and under the artistic direction of Boy Gobert at the Thalia Theater in Hamburg. Even then he discovered his special talent for making programs for children and celebrated his first successes in Germany with the children’s TV series “Das feuerrote Spielmobil”.

This talent then brought Schleyer to bloom in Austria, where he continued his television work for and with children with the ORF programs “Erichs Chaos” and “The Leaning Tower”. And as a children’s book author, Schleyer came out with his “Spirello” stories, and “Cat Nora” (1987) and “Verschleyerte Geschichte” (1998) were also published.

The humorous mime could also be seen on television in “adult roles” and came up with guest roles in formats such as “Kommissar Rex”, “Der Alte” or “Tatort”. Schleyer embodied a total of more than 350 television and film roles in his life, in which the stage also played a central role.

In the early 1980s in Vienna, the theater actor made a great start at the Volkstheater in “One Flew Over the Cuckoo’s Nest”. He celebrated further successes in Hans Gratzer’s theater, among others in the queer classics “Rocky Horror Show” or “Angels in America”. Under the direction of George Tabori he also played “The Mass Murderer and Her Friends”, “The Ballade of the Wiener Schnitzel” and the “Babylon Blues” at the Burg- or Akademietheater.

Entry into the theater in Josefstadt

At the Theater an der Josefstadt he was seen, for example, as Peachum in the “Threepenny Opera” or in Peter Turrini’s “C’est la vie – A Revue”. And at the Volkstheater he was at the head of the ensemble in Tony Kushner’s “Advice for intelligent homosexuals on capitalism and socialism with a key to the Holy Scriptures”.

This rich life’s work, which he did last year with the artistic birthday party “At 80, nothing more is covered up!” crowned, did not go without thanks either. Apart from the popularity of the audience, Erich Schleyer was awarded, among other things, the Austrian Cross of Honor for Science and Art and the Golden Decoration for Services to the State of Vienna.
