After three very dry years, rainy weather is now just what the farmers want. The German Farmers’ Association at least expects a good harvest of grain.
The harvest expectations of German farmers for grain this year are 45.4 million tons, slightly below the average of previous years.
But it was 5 percent above the previous year’s result, said Joachim Rukwied, President of the German Farmers’ Association, on Wednesday. The past three years have been too dry for agriculture.
The weather extremes are increasing, with regional differences, said the president. There are dry periods, then again massive rain and also hail showers.
The precipitation in the past two weeks has eased the situation in many regions. “The farmers have a smile on their faces,” said Rukwied. The rain would lay the foundations for the good development of other crops such as corn, beets and vegetables.
