A legendary ex-punk conquers the ESC stage. Unfortunately, that will not happen. John Lydon aka Johnny Rotten is not going to Liverpool.
Former punk rock band Sex Pistols frontman John Lydon has failed in his entry as Ireland’s nominee for this year’s Eurovision Song Contest. The song “Hawaii” by his band Public Image Ltd, with which the 67-year-old, formerly known as Johnny Rotten, wanted to draw attention to his wife Nora’s Alzheimer’s disease, only came fourth in the pre-selection. The band Wild Youth will now represent Ireland with their song “We Are One” at the ESC final on May 13 in Liverpool.
“It’s going to be difficult for me tonight,” said Lydon after the result was announced. He had written the song in memory of a vacation together with his wife and submitted it to the Irish pre-selection. Lydon was born in London to Irish parents.
The Ukrainian band Kalush Orchestra won last year’s ESC with their song “Stefania”. Normally the competition would therefore take place in Ukraine this year. Because of the ongoing war, however, it will be held in Great Britain, which took second place with Sam Ryder.
