The politician wants to stick to her demand for austerity measures for the public broadcaster.
“In times of inflation, when everyone who finances the ORF and all media companies have to save, the ORF must also save, because the money for the ORF doesn’t grow on trees,” said Raab in a statement to the APA. “Only when this has been clarified can a new form of ORF financing be discussed. For me, it is crucial that people will have to pay less for ORF in the future than they do now. Austrians finally need an ORF discount. “
Weißmann had warned in November that from 2024 ORF would face “one of the biggest financing crises in its history” and that the current financing model could no longer guarantee that the public service mandate would be fulfilled. At the same time, a decision by the Constitutional Court (VfGH) must be implemented by 2024, according to which the streaming use of ORF offers must also be subject to a fee in the future. Up for discussion are the extension of the GIS to devices capable of streaming, the introduction of a household fee or the financing of the ORF from the federal budget.
