Although he never achieved the popularity as a solo artist achieved by the late Lou Reed, that is to say the other founder of the revolutionary band The Velvet Underground, John Cale remained just as prolific and creative throughout the decades. However, it had been seven years since he had entered the studio to record, and for this reason this “Mercy” is more surprising and welcome. The first track that gives the album its title already shows an artist renewed in his creative vein, with a great song full of electronic textures, keyboards and choirs at the level of his works in collaboration with Brian Eno, for example. “Mercy” has a dozen songs with different styles, although always within the same climate between techno and reflective, with intermittently kind or dramatic rhythms. There are guest artists like Animal Collective, Actress and Sylvan Esso (although it’s Cale who always writes and plays almost all the instruments), and inspirational tracks include “Marilyn Monroe’s Legs (Beauty Elsewhere)”, “Not The End Of The World” and “Moonstruck”, dedicated to Nico, the singer of the Velvet Underground.
