A 1969 souvenir brochure released to mark the ceremonial installation of Charles as Prince of Wales said: “His Royal Highness well remembers being photographed with King George VI on his third birthday. ” Then the text continues: “In many ways the Prince of Wales resembles his ancestor: he is just as reserved, thoughtful and always careful not to hurt other people’s feelings.” The fact that the grandson inherited the king’s tendency to have brief but violent tantrums in stressful situations was tactfully concealed. George VI died a few months later. at the age of just 56.
