Five years ago the “bone breaker” Tamme Hanken died of sudden heart failure. His wife Carmen took over the farm – her late husband is still present there.

The sudden death of Tamme Hanken touched millions of people in 2016. The animal healer, known from the NDR documentary soap “Der XXL-Ostfriese”, died of heart failure at the age of only 56. Sunday marked the fifth anniversary of his death. His wife Carmen Hanken took over her husband’s Hankenhof with a large number of horses, cattle, sheep and dogs as well as several employees.

Five years after Tamme Hanken’s death, her deceased husband is still “present every day”, said Carmen Hanken of the “Nordwest-Zeitung”. She has not changed anything in the rooms in the main building of the courtyard; her husband’s pictures and promo posters are still hanging there. Carmen Hanken continues the farm, albeit in a stripped-down form: For economic reasons, she has sold almost half of the property in Filsum, East Frisia, as well as most of the animals, reports the “Bild” newspaper.

Tamme and Carmen Hanken spent more than 14 years together. “I assume that he is proud that the farm is still in my hands and because I am continuing the work that he found important to help the animals,” said the 61-year-old of the “Nordwest-Zeitung” “. The 2.06 meter tall Tamme Hanken was particularly popular in the north and among animal and horse lovers. This was partly due to the popular NDR television series with almost 60 episodes, but above all to his way of dealing with animals. Hanken worked as a bone breaker – an East Frisian term for an alternative naturopath. He corrected the limbs or vertebrae of animals. Since this can produce noticeable cracking noises, the name bone crusher was created.

Carmen Hanken is happy again

His sudden death five years ago left a huge void in his widow’s life. In the first two years she had to rearrange her life, Carmen Hanken looks back. However, since she decided to take over the farm a week after his death, there was hardly any time to mourn. Today she seems to be fine again: “I am very happy with my work and my current life – except that my partner is not there.”
