Raid: Haiti’s President Moïse killed

The desperately poor country of Haiti suffers from violence and corruption, and there has been no parliament for a year and a half. Now strangers have killed the head of state. The Caribbean state is on the brink.

Haitian President Jovenel Moïse was attacked and fatally injured at his residence on Wednesday night (local time).

His wife Martine Moïse was injured in the attack, said the government of the Caribbean state. The attackers spoke Spanish, the message said.

Ex-Prime Minister Claude Joseph condemned the attack as “hateful, inhuman and barbaric” and called on the population to calm down. The security forces have the situation under control. “All measures are being taken to ensure the continued existence of the state and to protect the nation,” the statement said. “Democracy and the republic will prevail.” Joseph was head of government until Tuesday before being replaced by Ariel Henry.

Haiti is in a deep political crisis. Since a parliamentary election scheduled for October 2019 was canceled due to violent protests against Moïse, Haiti has no parliament since the beginning of the new legislative period in January 2020. Moïse has since ruled by decree.

Haiti is considered to be the poorest country in the western hemisphere. Protests against Moïse have paralyzed it again and again in recent years. He was accused of corruption and links to violent gangs. The struggles of such gangs for control of parts of the capital Port-au-Prince have displaced almost 15,000 people since the beginning of June, according to UN figures. Around 4.4 million of the 11 million Haitians need humanitarian aid. In addition, new corona infections and deaths have recently increased significantly.
