In the bright red look, Rihanna was the eye-catcher on the Super Bowl stage. With the choice of her outfit, the 34-year-old made an emotional statement.
Rarely has an appearance on the Super Bowl halftime show been more eagerly awaited than Rihanna’s. The 34-year-old has not been on stage for five years, and her last major tour was seven years ago. Fans of the singer had therefore hoped that she might announce new concerts after her Super Bowl performance.
Super Bowl halftime show: Rihanna is pregnant for the second time
But Rihanna had another surprise in store: the mother of a nine-month-old son is pregnant again. Right at the beginning of her performance, she lovingly stroked her baby bump. It couldn’t be overlooked in the jumpsuit, which was open to the navel.
While all the dancers around her wore white outfits, Rihanna was the eye-catcher on the partly floating Super Bowl stage in her bright red one-piece suit. At the end of her 13-minute performance, she intoned her hit “Umbrella” and put on a voluminous leather coat.
The oversized look in bright red was no coincidence, but a homage to the legendary “Vogue” journalist André Leon Talley, with whom Rihanna was close friends and also worked together regularly. He died in January 2022 at the age of 73. Nearly two meters tall, Talley was known for his extravagant, eye-catching fashion style. Among other things, he always wore a red down coat by the designer Norma Kamali. Rihanna paid tribute to this iconic piece of clothing at the Super Bowl.
André Leon Talley coat up for auction
A photo and video of the singer’s performance was published on André Leon Talley’s official Instagram profile, along with the lines from her song “Umbrella”: “When the sun shines, we’ll shine together / Told you I’ll be here forever… / said I’ll always be your friend”. Rihanna pointed to the Arizona sky over and over again on her final song, “Diamonds,” as if she were singing to her late boyfriend.
Incidentally, André Leon Talley’s original coat will be auctioned in a few days at Christie’s in New York. The designer piece should bring in 500 to 800 dollars. Maybe even Rihanna can be tempted to make a bid.
