The rush to the large Vermeer exhibition in Amsterdam’s Rijksmuseum beats everything that has gone before. More than 100,000 tickets had already been sold a month before the start – breaking a record for the museum. There was a rush on tickets after Friday’s opening. The museum’s website was unavailable for hours. Yesterday, the museum announced that all 450,000 tickets available through June 4 have been sold. Now it is being checked whether the opening hours can be extended. “The interest is huge worldwide,” said the director of the Rijksmuseum, Taco Dibbits. The museum only allows a limited number of visitors at a time, so the often small-format paintings are easy for everyone to see.
For the largest Vermeer exhibition to date, 28 of the 37 works still known can be viewed, including the world-famous “Girl with a Pearl Earring” created between 1664 and 1667. This has never happened before. “The fact that so many of the precious pictures from seven countries have been brought together at all borders on a miracle,” says museum director Dibbits.
