In the trailer, Hawke first appears in white face paint and a top hat, struggling with falling shopping bags next to a rickety black van. There he attracts the young protagonist of the film (played by Mason Thames) with stories of being a part-time magician, and soon, viewers are transported to the basement of the aforementioned murder. The trailer shows the boy being tortured by Hawke’s character, who dons terrifying masks and taunts him with stories of previous victims and his own childhood. A neighborhood girl is also loaded with visions of the captured young man, and will try to help by leading the police to him before it is too late.

Jeremy Davies, E. Roger Mitchell, Madeleine McGraw, and James Ransone are co-stars. Derrickson adapted the script with C. Robert Cargill. “The Black Phone” is an adaptation of a Joe Hill story.
