Frontotemporal dementia: what is it?
Frontotemporal dementia is caused by a group of disorders that gradually damage the frontal and temporal lobes of the brain. These damages cause disturbances in thinking and behavior, emotional problems, difficulty communicating, challenges at work, and problems walking.
These types of disorders tend to occur at a earliest age than other types of dementias. Approximately 60% of people with frontotemporal dementia have between 45 and 64 years. Frontotemporal dementia is progressivewhich means that the symptoms get worse over time.

What are the causes?
The underlying causes of frontotemporal dementia are not yet fully understood, but it is known to be related to genetic mutations that compromise the Tau Protein, which is why they are called tauopathies. If there is a case of frontotemporal dementia in the family, there is a greater chance of having it, but there is not a risk factor acquaintance.
People with this type of dementia have abnormal amounts or forms of tau and TDP-43 proteins within neurons of the brain. Because the buildup of these proteins causes damage, neurons die. Regarding treatment, currently there is no curerather than the use of antipsychotics or antidepressants.
