Based on a true story, the flick about the investigation into a brutal murder of a woman won the César in six categories, including the award for best picture. The ceremony in Paris was overshadowed by heated discussions about the nominee lists, on which women were clearly in the minority. “Last year the Oscars were criticized for being so white in their nominations, and this year for being so male,” said Collectif 50/50, which fights for equality in French film. “The Césars 2023 are both together.”
Hollywood star Brad Pitt appeared as a surprise guest at the gala in Paris. He took over the honor from director David Fincher (60) with a César for his life’s work. Pitt had shot the films “Seven” and “Fight Club” with Fincher, among others.
The César – named after the sculptor César Baldaccini – is the French version of the Oscars. It has been awarded since 1976.
