“Superman Lives” de Tim Burton
¿Nicolas cage like Superman? Yes, that almost happened. The most gothic director of all came very close to carrying out “Superman Lives”, since the American came from reaping success by “Batman”. Warner Bros. planned to release the film in the summer of 1998 on the occasion of the 60th anniversary of the character’s debut in Action Comics. Kevin Smith he was hired to review the script for the project and, by his own account, it was sheer madness. As a curiosity, finally the project came to the screen but in the form of a documentary, “The Death of Superman Lives: What Happened?” (2015) a more than interesting behind the scenes that shows why despite having invested millions the studio ended up discarding the idea.
“Napoleon” by Stanley Kubrick
It is for many the greatest film ever made in history, “Napoleon” would have been the filmmaker’s next project after “2001: A Space Odyssey”. Stanley Kubrick carried out a meticulous and extensive research on the French conqueror gathering more than 500 books on his figure. This mega production on Bonaparte would have brought together for the first time Jack Nicholson, embodying the emperor, and the director in a project that demanded, among other excessive requests, 50,000 extras who should have undergone a 4-month military training. Why was it not filmed? The production supposed a great economic waste and the commercial failure of “Waterloo” from Sergey Bondarchuk made the producers not bet on the film. The MGM canceled the project just as it was to be shot in 1969. Apparently HBO and the director Cary Fukunaga (“No Time to Die “) will turn this vision of Kubrick into a series about Napoleon.

“Dune” by Alejandro Jodorowsky
The most influential unrealized science fiction movie. Based on the science fiction book by Frank Hebert, the adaptation of Alejandro Jodorowsky would have had a soundtrack by Pink Floyd; with H. R. Giger, Chris Foss and Jean Giraud to design the sets and characters; and a cast led by actors like Orson Welles, Mick Jagger, Gloria Swanson, David carradine and Salvador Dali. Five years of working together that was reflected in around three thousand drawings that condense dialogues, shots, camera positions. Finally, no studio wanted to bet on the overproduction of Jodorowsky because all his previous films were too surreal. “Dune” would hit the big screen in 1984 directed by David Lynch, this year came a new adaptation by Denis Villeneuve, but for those who want to know more about this failed project, they can see the documentary “Jodorowsky’s Dune”, an excellent account of what could be.
“Alien 5” by Neill Blomkamp
Neill Blomkamp, director known for “District 9” and “Chappie”, was in more than advanced conversations to direct “Alien 5”. The film would have been a chronological sequel to the saga but it would ignore “Alien 3” and “Alien Resurrection”, so it would act as a direct sequel to “Aliens: The Return”. This movie would have starred Sigourney Weaver, but would also have recovered the characters of Newt, now an adult, and Hicks, played by Michael Biehn. The conceptual artist Geoffrey Thoorens revealed drawings made between 2014 and 2015 that showed a new team of mercenaries (including a dog), a Hicks disfigured from his burns during “Aliens: The Return”, new androids, and an ever-awesome Ripley. Finally the project was shelved because Ridley Scott decided to continue with a sequel to “Prometheus” that would connect more with the main saga, giving rise to “Alien Covenant”, a film that did not achieve the expected impact.

“Justice League: Mortal” de George Miller
“Justice League: Mortal” It was a failed project to create a movie based on the group of heroes from DC Comics, The Justice League, which was to be led by George Miller with a script of Kieran and Michele Mulroney. Warner Bros. approved the script in 2007 and they hoped to start filming in 2008, the idea was that the film would be the beginning of a new film franchise, whose sequels and spin-offs would be developed separately from the universe created by Christopher Nolan for Batman. However, the writers’ strike began the same month that production was to begin, which forced Warner Bros. to delay production, this and other situations took longer than expected, which caused the project to be abandoned. In October 2013, several years after the project’s cancellation, the script for the film, which included a broad cast of characters, was leaked. Among the superheroes were, in addition to Superman and Batman, Wonder Woman, Green Lantern, Martian Manhunter, Aquaman, Flash and Kid Flash.
