The heavy and gripping narrative of a spy thriller, in the midst of the world of fantasies that is Star Wars caught fans by surprise and it gave Star Wars a chance to explore a new flavor. Instead, The Mandalorianhe kicked the door of his third season with a combo that hooks the general public and the fan and reminds him why classic adventures always hook us again.
In his first episode, The Mandalorian wastes no time in explaining that although Grogu parted ways with Din at the end of season two, they are now together again after the events of The Book of Boba Fett. Even so, the possible confusion does not have time to decant before the speed of the episode and the feeling that how they got back together isn’t really that relevant. What matters is that they are here and they are here to save the day.
Through the 35 minute reintroduction to the seriesits creators (Jon Favreau, Dave Filoni and Rick Famuyiwa) build everything the viewer needs to know. Din Djarin was expelled from his Mandalorian creed after removing his helmet of his own free will. Now he must bathe in the mines of the planet Mandalore but rumors say that he is poisoned after being attacked by the Empire. Between friends, villains, antagonists and surprisesfrom the first episode it can be seen that the former bounty hunter is going to have to test his beliefs and his chances for the future this season.
But there is no reason to lie to us, we all came here to see Baby Yoda. With or without a new name, the public’s favorite little creature stole our hearts over three years ago and propelled the series to be more than something new from Star Wars: thanks to Grogu, The Mandalorian is a cultural phenomenon itself. In this context, the episode tenderly explores how the little is gaining independencehow he moves to get what he wants and like dad, Mando has to set the limits for him.
He also wastes no time exploiting the amazing chemistry that they can have a puppet and a person who always has a helmet on. The relationship between Mando and Grogu is at an all time high. dave filoni (producer of the series and George Lucas Apprenticecreator of the saga) always said that Star Wars talks about family ties and The Mandalorian constantly proves it. It will be key that the remaining episodes go deeper into Grogu the character than the tool to win over the public.
In that sense, the The Mandalorian’s season opener is not without its flaws. It cannot be avoided to mention that, in order to bring the entire audience up to date, some sections of the episode are supported by somewhat unnatural dialogue expositions that take you out of the carefully constructed universe for those moments.

These errors, however, are characteristic of a first episode of this style. With seven more chapters ahead, the first half hour is a welcome hug. Do you like fighting against giant monsters? Western-style duels? Special ship fights? Aliens with particular designs and executed with old-school special effects? Humor and tenderness? The Mandalorian promises all of this and towards the end of the episode opens the door to see that the universe is much bigger. This new chapter is just beginning.
After testing the seriousness and with the opportunity to expand to limits that we still can’t imagine, Star Wars is dispatched with half an hour that reminds us of the value of the classic adventure that inspired George Lucas during the 70’s. escapism and entertainment are the reason the audiovisual medium exists and The Mandalorian is proof that this franchise has always led the way.
