Prison sentence: South Africa: Ex-President Jacob Zuma starts prison sentence

His term of office was overshadowed by allegations of corruption and he had not followed a court order: Now the South African ex-president Jacob Zuma has started his prison sentence.

The South African ex-President Jacob Zuma started his prison sentence on Thursday night.

He was in the EstCourt Correctional Center in KwaZulu-Natal, said the South African police. The 79-year-old decided to face the police, said the Zuma Foundation.

Last week the Constitutional Court sentenced Zuma to a prison term of 15 months for disregarding a subpoena. Zuma has to answer to a commission of inquiry for various allegations of corruption during his term of office and had not followed a court summons. It is the first time ever that a former president of the country has been sentenced to prison. His term in office from 2009 to 2018 was overshadowed by allegations of corruption.
