500,000 dead in Brazil: protests against Bolsonaro’s corona policy

In the capital Brasília and 14 provincial capitals, they called for more vaccinations and economic support in the corona crisis on Saturday, as the news platform “G1” reported. Bolsonaro’s resignation was also requested. The authorities said that Brazil had more than half a million corona deaths.

According to the Ministry of Health on Saturday, 500,800 people have died in connection with the Covid-19 disease in the largest country in Latin America. So far, there have only been more corona deaths in the United States, with just under 602,000 victims. The number of corona infections for Brazil is almost 18 million. Every day there are currently around 80,000 proven cases. Almost 30 percent of people in the country have received a first dose of vaccine so far, around eleven percent are fully vaccinated.

The government of the right-wing President Jair Bolsonaro played down the pandemic from the start and braced itself against tough exit restrictions with reference to the economic consequences. Most recently, Bolsonaro also questioned the point of vaccination. A parliamentary committee of inquiry is now examining Bolsonaro’s crisis management in the pandemic.

The protesters’ criticism also extended beyond the corona crisis management on Saturday. People also called for more efforts to fight hunger and environmental degradation, as well as respect for the rights of indigenous peoples.
