Genesis is getting serious. After the larger models G80 and GV80, the Korean luxury offshoot of the Hyundai Group is now introducing the G70 Shooting Brake.
This is quite surprising, because interest in station wagons is declining in most markets – including in Europe – due to the ongoing wave of SUVs. Nevertheless, the Koreans decided to develop not only a sporty sedan of the Genesis G70 especially for the European market, but also a chic station wagon variant. It is specially positioned against the German premium trio of BMW 3 Series, Audi A4 Avant and Mercedes C-Class and can always be seen with a remarkable design. As with the big brothers Genesis G80 and GV80, the Koreans not only focus on design, but also on luxurious equipment.
The engine portfolio of the 4.69 meter long mid-range station wagon is much more manageable than expected. The Genesis G70 Shooting Brake is initially only available with a diesel and gasoline engine with four cylinders. The two-liter turbo gasoline engine has an output of 180 kW / 245 PS and a maximum torque of 353 Nm. The 2.2 liter common rail diesel with an output of 147 kW / 200 PS / 440 Nm is significantly more economical. Both models are linked to an eight-speed automatic transmission; there is a choice of rear-wheel or all-wheel drive. A turbocharged six-cylinder engine is missing, as is an electric or at least a hybrid drive variant offered by the competition.
The interior of the mid-range station wagon is both chic and elegant. In contrast to the identically motorized sedan of the Genesis G70, there is in particular a significantly larger cargo space with a capacity of 465 liters – around 40 percent more than the sedan. With the rear seat folded down, the volume behind the electric tailgate increases up to 1,535 liters. With the G70 Shooting Brake, customers can choose between the equipment variants Premium, Luxury and Sport. In addition to the corresponding comfort features, the Genesis G70 Shooting Brake, like all other models from the Korean car manufacturer, is equipped with a complete package of driver assistance and safety systems. In terms of price, it should start at under 50,000 euros. Included in the price: five-year guarantee, service, breakdown service and corresponding updates.
