The legendary US rock band Lynyrd Skynyrd confirmed this on their Facebook page. Songs like “Sweet Home Alabama” (1974) and “What’s Your Name” (1977) made the group from Jacksonville, Florida world famous. “It is with our deepest sympathy and sadness that we have to announce that today we lost our brother, friend, family member, songwriter and guitarist, Gary Rossington,” the group said. Rossington was 71 years old, reported US media. A band manager confirmed the death to the Washington Post. Ken Levitan was initially unable to provide information on the cause of death and where the musician died.
With Rossington, the last living founding member of the rock band has now died. Lynyrd Skynyrd was one of the most important representatives of southern rock in the 1970s. The line-up of the band has changed over the years. In 1977, two members, including singer and founding member Ronnie Van Zant, died in a plane crash. Gary is now in heaven with his Skynyrd brothers and family and is continuing to play there like he always has, the band wrote in their post.
