Many Germans are going on vacation again this year, also in their own country. In May, however, domestic tourism was still far from pre-crisis levels.
Tourism in Germany started rather slowly in the second summer under Corona conditions.
Although the hotels and other accommodation providers with at least ten beds counted more overnight stays in May than in the weak month of the previous year, they ultimately only achieved just under a third of the volume from May 2019. More than one in four establishments was completely closed, as was the case with the Federal Statistical Office in Wiesbaden reported.
According to the information, the 14.3 million overnight stays in May marked an increase of 29.4 percent over the previous year (11.1 million). The comparison mark from May 2019 was 44.5 million overnight stays.
Last year, the number of overnight stays in the summer months rose sharply due to travel restrictions that had been lifted in the meantime, but never reached the level of 2019. A similar trend is expected this year. For the first five months, 2021 is 48.4 percent behind 2020. This is largely due to the fact that at the beginning of 2020 the hotels were still open without restriction for almost three months.
