Humor is when you laugh anyway. The guest performance of the Viennese TheaterArche at the Traun Theater Spring invites you to do so, with a felt noose around your neck. The play by the Ukrainian author Jura Soyfer, who died in 1939 at the age of 27 in the Buchenwald concentration camp, is oppressively topical. In 1936 he warned of the apocalypse of World War II: “The End of the World” is the template for “Prof. Guck sucht das Glück”, an entertaining (90 minutes without a break) synthesis of the arts of theatre, dance and lots of music by Jakub Kavin (director), Jana Schuller-Frank and the ensemble.
A true Viennese never goes under. Not even if the whole world ends because a comet is heading straight for it to rid it of humans. All attempts by Professor Guck (Margot Binder) to warn humanity fail. What an opportunity is the comet for economic growth thanks to doomsday crypto funds or for a new ratings record thanks to doomsday talk show audiences find themselves in. Corona, the Ukraine war, climate change – with the comets of the present in mind, the versatile and musically admirably accomplished TheaterArche-Ensemble celebrates the absurd, the grotesque in skilful role changes. Empty political phrases, Kafkaesque bureaucracy, blind party fever and many quotes from politics, literature and the Bible expose the blind dance of mankind over the abyss, fanned by Ruei-Ran- “Algy” Wu on the piano.
