Later than originally announced, but now faster than expected, the Green Pass is fully operational. As of today, Sunday, in addition to certificates for corona tests and recovery from a Covid 19 infection, it will also be possible to create and access proof of vaccination with EU-compliant QR codes via Gesundheit.gv.at However, due to the high number of accesses to the platform, delays could occur in some cases, emphasized a spokeswoman for the department.
On Saturday, Health Minister Wolfgang Mückstein (Greens) assumed that full operation would start next week. Now the change has gone faster than hoped, said a spokeswoman.
Questions and answers about the Green Pass:
What is the Green Pass?
It is an umbrella term for an EU-compliant certificate that proves a vaccination, a previous infection or a negative test result by means of a QR code on paper or in digital form. So it is a vaccination, recovery or test certificate.

How do I get the certificate with QR code?
- Electronic: To create and access the information, you can register via the health portal at gesundheit.gv.at using your mobile phone signature or citizen card. Click on “Green Pass” to get to the documents.
- If you are less tech-savvy or have no cell phone signature, you can contact Municipal offices, district administrative authorities or ELGA ombudsman offices and have the documents printed out there.
- Additional service for vaccinated people: According to the ministry, all those who are fully immunized by the end of June should receive a printout of the vaccination certificate by post. In the course of the coming week it should also be possible to print out the vaccination certificate in pharmacies or general practitioners’ practices.
How do I get the cell phone signature?
The Handy-Signatur is like a signature, only electronically. It enables you to prove your identity online using your mobile phone. The signature can either be via the Internet, for example via Finanzonline, requested or personally be activated in places like finance or post office. More information at handy-signatur.at.
What does the Green Pass bring?
It is used as an access certificate, for example for gastronomy and culture. From July 1st, traveling within Europe should become easier and safer. But there is one big catch: The EU states can determine the entry regulations themselves – for example, those who have recovered in one country might only need one vaccination, but two stitches in another. So if you want to go abroad with the Green Pass, you should first take a closer look at the requirements in the holiday country.
How is it controlled?
Via the “Green Check” website, waiters, event organizers or other inspectors can scan the QR code and check whether the pass is valid. A green tick appears on the display, along with your name and date of birth. If a red prohibition sign appears, the passport is invalid. A possible reason is an expired test.
Is the Green Pass compulsory?
No, participation is voluntary. In addition to the offer of confirmation via QR code, it will still be possible to present paper proof in combination with an official ID within Austria.
