Meghan and Harry don’t have to pay rent for Frogmore Cottage

Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan have until the summer to pack their things to leave Frogmore Cottage in Windsor to Uncle Prince Andrew. King Charles III’s decision to strip the Sussexes of their British home sparked debate a few weeks ago.

Now Frogmore Cottage is part of the coverage again. As the “Mail on Sunday” explains, Meghan and Harry do not pay rent for the spacious property. Behind it is their expensive renovation, which was originally paid for by taxpayers’ money, but which the couple was supposed to pay for themselves after the so-called Megxit. “The Duke and Duchess of Sussex have made a £2.4million contribution to the Sovereign Grant which covered the refurbishment of Frogmore Cottage. They have met their financial obligations in relation to the property,” read a statement.

According to the Mail on Sunday, the two paid five months’ rent after stepping down from royal life before paying the full amount.

Frogmore Cottage has been renovated

After Meghan and Harry announced in 2020 that they would step down as senior royals, it was announced that they also want to pay for the renovation costs themselves. All part of their financial independence.

How comfortable the two felt in the property, they explained in their Netflix documentary “Harry & Meghan”. They said at the time that they were particularly drawn to the adjacent gardens and the nature of Windsor from the very first moment. It should be all the sadder for the Sussexes not to be able to stay there when they visit home in Great Britain.
