Long before the Russian war of aggression against Ukraine, the punk band denounced abuses in their homeland. Now the artists in the USA are being honored for their commitment.
The musicians of the Russian punk band Pussy Riot will be honored with the Woody Guthrie Prize this year. The band is scheduled to receive the award on May 6 in Tulsa, Oklahoma, and play a concert there that same evening, the local Woody Guthrie Center said on Thursday.
The award in memory of the US folk musician Guthrie (1912-1967) has been awarded since 2014 to artists who also “speak for the less fortunate” with their work. Previous honorees include Bruce Springsteen and Joan Baez. In the past, the musicians of Pussy Riot had repeatedly insisted on the observance of human rights in Russia and sharply condemned the attack on Ukraine.
