Before the federal election: warnings to parties about IT security deficiencies

Several public authorities have warned the parties in Germany of the risk of cyber attacks. During an audit, “numerous serious weaknesses” were identified.

With a view to the federal elections in autumn, several public authorities have drawn the parties’ attention to security deficiencies in their IT systems and the risks of disinformation campaigns.

The National Research Center for Applied Cybersecurity Athene, which belongs to the Fraunhofer-Gesellschaft, identified “numerous serious weaknesses” during an examination of the security of the IT systems of German parties, reports “Wirtschaftswoche”.

All parties then received detailed information on the respective weak points, as well as tips on “where there is urgent need for action at short notice,” said institute director Michael Waidner of the magazine. In May, the parties had also received mail from the head of the Federal Office for Information Security (BSI), Arne Schönbohm. In it, they offered support and advice on protection against hacker attacks, accompanied by general information such as: “Create an e-mail account as a reference account for each social media account. These e-mail accounts should be protected and only used for this purpose. ».
