Meghan Markle writes a letter to US politicians – and calls for paid parental leave

Meghan Markle has never spoken so directly on any political issue: In an open letter to the spokesman for the US Senate and House of Representatives, Prince Harry’s wife requested the introduction of paid parental leave.

Whether climate protection, women’s rights or the fight against racism: Meghan Markle has her own opinion on many topics and has repeatedly expressed this in the past. But Prince Harry’s wife has not yet spoken out as clearly and directly as in this case. The 40-year-old wrote an open letter to the American politicians Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi. Both hold enormously important positions: The Democrat Schumer is the majority leader in the US Senate, his party colleague Pelosi is the Speaker of the House of Representatives.

Both have a huge influence on the introduction and enactment of new laws. And that’s exactly what Meghan Markle is all about. In her letter sent on Wednesday, she asked for the introduction of paid parental leave.

She justifies her request with her own experience: “In June my husband and I had our second child. How Everyone We parents were overjoyed. (…) As few As parents, we were not confronted with the harsh reality of either spending the first critical months with our baby or having to go back to work, “writes the Duchess, who is well aware of her privileges:” We knew that we were not impossible choices between childcare, work, and medical care that so many have to endure every single day. ”

Meghan Markle writes on behalf of American families

Her request to the politicians: “No family should be confronted with these decisions. No family should have to choose between earning a living and the freedom to look after their children.” She writes on behalf of millions of American families, according to Markle, who want paid parental leave.

At the end of the letter she thanks “on behalf of my family, Archie and Lili and Harry” for the fact that the two addressees have taken the letter into account. Will your intervention meet with open ears? Chuck Schumer and Nancy Pelosi have not yet commented.
